Seminarian Samuel Kalu - Welcome!

My heart echoes with gratitude to you, parishioners of St. Martha and St. Mary, for the warm
welcome I have received. My name is Samuel Kalu, and I am a seminarian at St. John’s
Seminary, studying to be a priest for the Archdiocese of Boston. I have been assigned here for an eight-week summer assignment, which offers me a special opportunity to be present in this vibrant collaborative community and to learn from the pastor and from you all.

I am the youngest of five children, born into a devout Catholic family in Nigeria. Growing up, I
was deeply inspired by the piety of my parents and the heroic pastoral example of our parish
priest, who was like a father, counselor, teacher, and shepherd to all—a true “superhero” for
Christ. This ignited a strong desire in me to serve God and His people, leading me to five years in the seminary in Nigeria, where I completed a year of discernment and philosophical studies.

After some time away for further discernment and theological studies, I took a leap of faith in
2023 to begin my graduate studies in the United States. While at Boston University, I became actively involved in St. Katharine Drexel Parish in Dorchester, where I shared my musical gifts in the liturgy and found a spiritual home. As I entered the discernment process with the Archdiocese of Boston, I began to experience a renewed sense of peace, clarity, and purpose in my vocation. Boston has become a home away from home, where I am striving to respond to God’s call with humility, trust, heartfelt smiles, and joyful obedience. I humbly ask for your prayers that I may become a good and holy priest, devoted fully to God and His people.
